It’s the Kielbasa Kid…

…and while they say March roars in like a Lion and goes out like a lamb it looks like were going to have a lamb kind of approach to the month but I wouldn’t be putting away the boots and shovels just yet. The great prognosticator that is Punxsutawney Phil predicted 6 more weeks of winter and according to the calendar spring doesn’t arrive until Saturday March 20th. So there is still plenty of time for old man winter to whip out something from his bag of tricks like he did on March 12th 1993. It started snowing that night, the day before the Pittsburgh St. Patrick’s day parade which they didn’t cancel.  In fact it was the only parade on the East Coast not to cancel. Cancel?  “Hey who yinz  talkin’ ‘bout here ‘n ‘nat, were from ‘da ‘burg!”  Believe it or not the parade continued in blizzard conditions but without marching bands because all the high schools said “no way!” It was the first and only time that I saw lighting and heard thunder during a snow storm. It was around 2 in the afternoon and I was in the parkway center mall parking lot. I was getting provisions before heading to a local hotel close to where I had to work that night. I could look down on the parkway west and the only thing I saw that night was one lone soul walking on the inbound side. Turns out Pittsburgh set a record for the most snowfall in a 24 hour period with 23.6 inches and has since been known as the Blizzard of ’93, the Storm of the Century. Now here’s something I find hard to believe but it was the first storm that had been predicted accurately five days before the snow fell. Well, I guess it’s possible. I mean even the Browns won a playoff game for the first time in 20 years…so yeah, it’s possible. So pretty much a whimper as we enter the month of March but maybe the ole man is doing some deep breathing exercises for one last roar.
