It’s the Kielbasa Kid…

…and here we are less than a month away from the unofficial start to summer and the Memorial day weekend and the start of the grilling out season. For some folks like me the grilling out never really stops even during the middle of winter. When it comes to marinades there are many bottled flavors to choose from but Mashed magazine says some people are grabbing bottles of Coke and Dr. Pepper for a special taste before grilling out. Experts say the acid in cola breaks down the meats proteins resulting in a softer texture and flavor. Some folks are braising their briskets in cola while others are cooking their wings in Coke because the heat turns the cola into a caramel like syrup and the perfect glaze. Years ago while working at another radio station we used to have a studio audience on Friday mornings and to be part of it you had to do one of two things. Play a musical instrument or bring food. Lets just say I gained a lot of weight during that period of my broadcast career and came away with a recipe that involved the use of cola. One morning someone brought in cut up kielbasa that had been slow cooking in a crock pot filled with coke overnight. The result was an amazing taste that you would have thought was cooked on a grill due to the perfect glaze it gave to the cut up sausage. When you literally cut up 3 pounds of Kielbasa and mixed it with a 2 liter bottle of Coke in a crock pot and went to bed only to wake up to the perfect pot luck dish for any picnic or what became a regular dish during Steeler Sundays.
