…and I save a ton of money doing my own oil changes. If you got the right tools it’s a piece of cake, sometimes. I got the right tools but sometimes when I put on the new oil filter I tighten it tighter than it needs to be. They say you should hand tighten the filter but I’m afraid it wont be tight enough and leak oil. So I use a handy dandy tool that not only takes off the old filter but helps to make it nice and snug, not too tight but snug. I guess the last time I changed the oil I made it snugger than it needed to be because I couldn’t get it off during my recent change which was about a month ago. My handy dandy tool started to crush the old filter while trying to take it off. I had heard you could drill a hole in the filter and put a screw drive through it but needed to see more evidence. So I goggled how to take off a tight oil filer and it confirmed what I thought. The only difference was to take a Phillips screw driver and tap it into the filter with a hammer and make sure to tap it through the other side of the filter. Then use the screw driver to twist it off. I figured since the old filter doesn’t seem to be leaking after crushing it I’d leave it on till it was time to change the oil again. I didn’t get a chance to wait that long. My warning chimes started going off but also went away as quick without any other sign of a problem at least until I got home. As I was backing into the drive way the warning chimes started again. This time a little oil can lit up on my dashboard. I popped the hood and saw a drip drip, drip. The dip stick read empty. I happened to have fresh oil in my garage and it took 2 and half quarts before I got a good reading on the dip stick. Now this might sound like a paid endorsement but its not. I drove to the Penn Hills Valvoline. I told the technician my problem and he confirmed it then put a new filer on, topped everything off and said have a good day. I said how much is it going to cost he said, your good. I tossed him ten bucks and said thank you very much. Now I don’t know if this is normal protocol but if it isn’t it should be because it just got them a little good will free publicity and quite possibly a future customer.
