It’s the Kielbasa Kid…

…and sad to hear the news that the Voice of the Pens and hall of fame broadcaster Mike Lange is hanging up his headset and retiring  from the broadcast booth after 46 years behind the mic. But I think the saddest day was when he was turned away from the TV side of the broadcast. Talk about a slap in the face when that happened. It was sort of like when Bob Prince the voice of the Pirates was canned back in the Mid 70’s but unlike Mike, Prince didn’t have anything to fall back on. In fact there was a period of time after Mike was canned from his TV duties whether or not he would ever broadcast another game in Pittsburgh. Thankfully there was an outlet for him to continue to call the games from and I for one made sure to tune in every chance I had. Yeah, I turned down the TV sound and cranked up Lange even if I couldn’t get the TV to Sync with the radio it was just a treasure to listen to Mike call the game. But now after all these years he finally has time to sit back and catch his breath or go hunt moose on a Harley or buy Sam a drink and get his dog one too or call Arnold Slick from Turtle Creek all the while smiling like a Butchers Dog!
