It’s the Kielbasa Kid…

another NFL season got underway Thursday night with the Packers beating the Bears in Chicago 10-3. Sunday is when the full slate of games will be played including a double header on Monday night. Steeler Sunday at my house used to be huge. It was a like a pot luck dinner before during and after the game. Chicken wings were always huge along with stuffed banana peppers, pizza, homemade cheese dips, all the stuff that would lay you up in the hospital for a week if you weren’t careful. Like doing ceremonial shots of whisky before the kickoff, halftime, end of game and every time the Steelers scored. Back when the late Myron Cope did the color commentary, he would slip in a Yoi whenever he got excited and we would do a shot. It got really interesting whenever he let loose a double or even a triple Yoi! Usually it was just me and my neighbor who were crazy enough to take part in that ritual and besides nobody had to drive anywhere. The biggest problem was that occasionally his wife needed help in pushing him up the the hill to their house. Today things have calmed down a bit and the only hold over is my Terrible Towel along with my Polamalu jersey both of which have been folded away nice and neat just sitting and waiting for another season to begin. I call it tradition while others call it superstition. Either way I’ll be front and center Sunday night when the Steelers play the Patriots who are once again favored to repeat as Super bowl champions. Here’s hoping the Steelers change the conversation come Monday morning.
