It’s the Kielbasa Kid…

and on this day in 1827 the first U.S. Railroad chartered to carry passengers and freight, the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Company was incorporated. March will mark 15 years that the wife and I took a train trip to Florida and it was great. We had our own room on the sleeping car, our own bathroom, small TV that played the same move over and over again. It was The Truman Show starring Jim Carey which wasn’t bad the first time thru but over and over and over, talk about a nightmare but we really didn’t care because the experience of the train travel across land was great. You could move from car to car while the train was chugging down the track. The train made a few stops along the way and I remember waking up the next day in a Savannah Georgia neighborhood, literally in what was someone’s back yard. But I can’t imagine what it must have been like stuck aboard a train for 36 hours like the more than 200 folks were stuck after hitting a tree that fell onto the tracks just south of Eugene, Oregon and surrounded by snow so you couldn’t get out. The passengers could see a deserted stretch of highway that was closed due to snow and ice and the town they were in had no electricity due to the weather. They got stuck Sunday night and it wasn’t long after that they were told that breakfast would be the last meal available. And I thought seeing the Truman Show over and over and over a nightmare. Thankfully no one was hurt and Amtrak will provide refunds and other compensation as appropriate.
