The 4th of July weekend…

…and the smell of sulfur is once again in the air from the occasional back yard sparkler to a full fledged display from the neighbor who spent a couple hundred bucks to put on a show that he promises to be bigger and better than last year.  We’re not talking your basic bottle rocket, cherry bomb or M-80. No, he’s got the good stuff from Crazy Jacks in Ohio that shower the night sky with sparkling colors and explosions loud enough to be heard miles away while vibrating the ground below. Of course that’s the neighbor who lives’ just far enough away that you hear the boom and maybe see a little spurt of color that you can occasionally make out through the trees. We’ll hear him or someone like him again tonight, tomorrow and even a few days after the 4th. A few years ago we were treated to a show put on by someone a few streets away from us but close enough that we were able to watch from our back patio as his rockets cleared the top of the trees and burst into the kind of a colorful shower that would rival a local town’s 4th of July celebration. This went on for about a half hour and made you feel like we should have helped pay for the entertainment because you knew he was the guy who drove to Crazy Jacks in Ohio and spent a lot more than just a couple hundred to watch his money go up in smoke. Not that theirs anything wrong with that because believe it or not it’s legal to put on a personal show in Pa but you’ve got to get a permit signed by a representative of the township but that’s where the problems begin because some municipalities have never even heard of such permits and have no idea who would need to review and sign it. Of course that’s what I read on the internet. Probably posted by Crazy Jack himself.
