It’s the Kielbasa Kid…

and happy Birthday to Baseball Hall of Fame and former LA Dodger Manager Tommy Lasorda who just turned 93 years young and made me wonder if he is still as calm and collected as he used to be because it’s just the nature of managers to be calm and collected. Yeah, when pigs fly. Back in the day Tommy had a classic rant when a reporter asked Lasorda about Dave Kingman’s performance and apparently it triggered something inside Lasorda that has become somewhat of a classic rant. You can hear it yourself. Just google Tommy Lasorda-Dave Kingman. But not only that you’ll also see a site labeled “The best profanity laced manager rants of all time” where you’ can see former Orioles manger Earl Weaver, and other managers more than losing their cool. Even Pirate manager Jim Leyland’s spring training discussion with former pirate Barry Bonds who I guess got under Leyland’s skin just one too many times and something that I managed to do too but only once. It was either in 1991 or 92 when I was a part of the so called stinkin’ media who are given the opportunity gather around the manager’s desk and stick their microphones into his face and ask questions. I guess Jim wasn’t too happy with the results from a pirate loss that night and when I asked about why he didn’t make a pitching change earlier in the game he apparently didn’t like the question. After telling me if I knew anything about baseball I would have known the answer. It was then while answering the question about how short his bench was he started swiping at stuff on his desk and knocking it all on to the floor. I guess he ran out of stuff to knock to the floor because it was at that point he declared the question and answer session was over and walked out. One of the reporters in the room, Alan Robinson from the Associated press leaned in and said to me “Good question”. Thanks Allen.
