It’s the Kielbasa Kid reminiscing about…

…the summer of 69 and not because I can’t get the song out of my head but I do go back their every time I hear it, no for some reason the summer of 69 is different from all the rest and seeing that it was on July 20th 1969 that Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to land on the moon brought back those memories. I remember being at my next door neighbors house watching it live on TV. A neighbor whose name I would always see written in cement along with mine and my sisters every time I would visit my mom because it was that summer my dad ripped out the wooden back porch and replaced it with a cement one. Honky Tonk Woman was all over the radio that summer and every Friday we would listen to WIXY 1360 on the car radio to hear the top songs and wondered if the Stones would be number one again. Living in Weirton West Virginia at the time and WIXY being in McKeesport the station didn’t come in very well except on the neighbor’s car radio which his dad let us use to listen to the count down. The summer of 69 reminds me of the A&W Root-beer stand whose existence would soon be gone but for many a summer it was the place to get a fresh jug of root beer which my dad would bring home so we could wash down the 10 cents a slice Naples pizza. I would be a freshman in high school when the summer of 69 ended and the innocent period in my life would slowly start to fade away too but whether it’s the song or a historical event, for me it’s always nice to go back to the summer of 69. Oh, and speaking of historical,a bag containing traces of moon dust that was mistakenly sold by the government to an suburban Chicago for $995.00 was awarded ownership after an out of this world court battle just last week sold it at auction for 1.8 million dollars.
