The Kielbasa Kid…

it was 50 years ago today history was about to be made on Max Yasgur’s farm in Bethel New York the original site for the Woodstock Music and Arts Fair. Who knew the event would take on a life of its own? That half a million people would travel to spend 3 days in what would become a disaster area. There was going to be another event to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Woodstock at Watkins Glenn New York but that went down in flames as did another site close by and one proposed for the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Maryland. But despite all that their will be a party 50 years in the making at the site of the original festival which is now Bethel Woods Center for the Arts with original Woodstock Veterans Santana and John Fogerty as well as Ringo Starr scheduled to perform at the venue this weekend but with a lot of restrictions. Even if you wanted to be at the original site to just breath in what happened 50 years ago you can’t unless you’ve got a ticket and their will be very un-Woodstock like elements like checkpoints with state cops posted on the roads leading to the venue. The weekends festivities kick off tonight with an outdoor screening of the legendary 1970 Woodstock documentary on the festival field. Original Woodstock performer Arlo Guthrie will perform before the movie and unlike in 1969 access will be tightly limited. The towns supervisor Dan Sturm told reports, “this time we’re going to get it right” unlike when Arlo 50 years ago this weekend said “man there’s supposed to be a million and a half people here tonight. Can you dig that? New York State Thruway is Closed Man!”
